Brockley Max festival

Ella And Rosamund mural for Brockley Max festival. When I was asked to be one of 3 artists painting the Black Icons Murals for Brockley Max festival 2023, I had no idea the project was inspired from my We Can’t Breathe mural 3 yrs ago!

Rosamund’s 9yr old daughter Ella is the first person in UK who’s cause of death is recorded as air pollution

I considered dropping out of this due to degenerative health conditions but pushed through, compelled to tell Ella’s heartbreaking story.

I wanted to create an uplifting positive mural celebrating Ella’s life reflecting this happy, fun and musically talented girl full of energy and the legacy she leaves behind

CONCEPT:

My design included a beautiful blue sky reflecting clean air, I later found out 9yr old Ella’s bedroom was painted the same colour as she loved the sky.
The warm sunlight is love and hope

The lavender fields symbolize healing of nature and peaceful sleep which I hope Ella now has.

The inclusion of a canary was requested by Rosamund and symbolizes Ella whom the coroner described as ‘the canary in the coal mine’. Rosamund stands not just as Ella’s mother in the mural but a mother nature figure as she continues to campaign for clean air
